How to sell personal training.

By Jason Odell, founder of RiseForIt

To sell personal training, ask before you explain: find where the person hurts and where they want to land, then sell that gap, never the steps of your program. Protect your price by adding value instead of discounting, and collect payment up front.

Sell the vacation, not the flight

People don't buy sets, macros and check-ins. They buy where they'll land. If you can't repeat their pain in their own words after the consult, you explained too much and asked too little.

The questions that do the selling

  • What are you trying to change, and why now?
  • What have you tried, and what happened?
  • What has it cost you to stay where you are?
  • If we fixed this, what would be different in 90 days?

Protect your price

When they push on price, add value, don't cut it. Collect cash up front, put real stakes behind your promise, and earn more from the clients you already have. 'If they can pay their car note, they can pay for training' is about priorities, not money.

Sessions, packages or online

Sessions sell your time and cap your income. Packages and online programs sell an outcome with an end date. Lead with the outcome.

Common questions

What do I say when they say they'll think about it?

Ask what they need to think about. Usually it's price, time or doubt. Answer that one thing.

Should I use a sales script?

Use questions, not a script. The questions do the selling.
